School Uniform Policy

RATIONALE

A uniform with high visual impact makes a positive statement about our schools’ values and creates a sense of unity among the students. At St Joseph’s, we believe that the school uniform should be comfortable, functional and affordable. Wearing this uniform will engender pride in our school and distinguish us as a school community. We actively encourage the children to take pride in their appearance and to dress in the correct uniform at all times. We require the support of all parents, students and teachers in maintaining the standard of our uniform.

AIMS

To maintain a good standard of uniform
To provide clear expectations
To assist parents

IMPLEMENTATION

Who is Involved?

Parents or Caregivers have sole responsibility for the purchase of uniforms for their child. Students and staff have a role to play, in ensuring compliance and maintenance of an appropriate standard, at all times.

General

The Principal will inform parents of this policy each year, during the Orientation Program and via the parent handbook, school website and school newsletter. All the main uniform items e.g. tunics, dresses, shorts, shirts, polo shirts, jumpers and jackets are to be purchased from the school. Order forms are sent home each semester and are also available on the school website.

Students are encouraged to take responsibility for a neat, clean and tidy uniform e.g. polish their own school shoes. All clothing and belongings should be clearly labelled.

No nail polish, hair colouring or makeup. Hair is to be neat and well groomed. Extreme hair styles are not acceptable (ie: rat’s tails or shaved lines in hair). Long hair must be secured back from the face for safety and hygiene. Navy hair bands or ribbons only. Students who have pierced ears should wear studs, for safety, however small sleepers are acceptable (plain gold or silver). No other visible jewellery should be worn, except watches.

Wearing a school hat is compulsory.

Shoes: Students must wear black leather, traditional or boot style school shoes that can be polished. Sports shoes should be worn on the allocated Sport day. Suede or canvas shoes are not acceptable at any time.

Parents are requested to provide a note of explanation should a child be unable to wear part of the uniform. Consequence for this breach is clearly outlined in the school’s Behavioural Support Policy.
