Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to our 2021 school year. It has been just so wonderful to see all of our students happy faces returning and ready to start a new year. Our Kinder students have fit in so beautifully and have enjoyed their first few days at school.
I would like to welcome all Mrs Belinda Bridgeman who is our Year 1 teacher this year. Last year we said goodbye to Ms Melinda Rego and Mrs Joeanne McEwen our Pastoral Care Worker.
I would also like to welcome our new families and students in Kinder as well as Willow and Zaybien in Year 3, Zac in Year 5 and Savannah in Year 6.
Parent Teacher Meet and Greet
We will be holding our parent teacher meet and greet during the week of the 22nd of February. This will be a chance for you to book in for a 10 minute meeting with your child’s teacher to get to know each other and talk about any concerns or questions as well as discuss learning goals for your child. You will be able to book in a time slot on Compass from next Monday afternoon and bookings will close on the 19th of February at 3pm. If you are unable to book through Compass, please contact Mary in the office for assistance.
How do I know what is going on?
We do our best to keep you informed of what is happening in the school. Information is sent out via different means depending on what it is.
Paper notes – Sometimes we need to send a paper note home, so keep an eye out in your child’s bag.
Compass- This is our main form of communication. Please make sure you have signed up and have a log in. If you can’t remember your log in or need a log in, please contact Mary in the office. School Reports are available on Compass, so this is important.
Facebook – We will often share photos, videos and reminders on Facebook, like and follow our page; St Joseph’s Primary School, Wingham.
Email - Our newsletters are emailed and these come out every second week on a Friday.
This year canteen will be open most Mondays for Meal Deals. The canteen will also be opened by our Year 6 leaders on Wednesday for students to buy a snack. If you are able to volunteer for any of these days we would love your help. Without volunteers we can’t open, so any help is much appreciated.
Breakfast club is open every morning and for a gold coin donation children are able to get two pieces of toast with their choice of butter, vegemite and cheese and have a glass of milk, milo or juice.
Road Safety
With many parents picking their children up and dropping them off at school Farquhar Street is very busy at school drop off and pick up time. Many parents are holding hands to cross the road which is wonderful to see, but I am concerned that there could be an accident. It is so important that we teach our children about road safety and how to cross the road safely. I encourage you to use the pedestrian crossing out the front of the museum when crossing the road.
Playground Updates
During the holidays more updates were made to the playground. It was great to see the children coming back to enjoy playing in two new cubbies, they are certainly popular play spaces for everyone. I would like to thank Mrs Minett, Mrs and Mrs Lapi-an and Mr Knoke who came in to help Mr Hunt and myself paint the cubbies ready for the first day.
The next stage of the playground upgrade is to put the shade up over the sandpit and complete the third and fourth cubby.
We are really looking forward to a wonderful year, with many exciting opportunities planned for our students and entire school community.
Please join me in saying a prayer for all Kinder students who started at school this week, that they feel safe, secure and a sense of belonging.
God Bless

Allergy Aware – Peanuts and Tree Nuts
St Joseph’s is concerned about the safety and well-being of all our students. Many of you will know someone who is affected by anaphylaxis, a life threatening allergic reaction. Our school does its best to be an allergy aware school. Staff have had training in severe allergy management and we have implemented lots of strategies to help keep students at risk of anaphylaxis as safe as we can.
We now have 3 students who live with the risk of anaphylaxis to foods including peanuts and tree nuts. Whilst these children are being taught to care for themselves at an age appropriate level, we ask that you help us educate your child on the importance of not sharing food with others, washing hands after eating and calling out to an adult if they think their friend with allergies is sick.
All classrooms are nut-free zones.
Help us to be allergy aware and protect our students:
Please DO NOT send peanuts, tree nuts or products that contain these foods.
These include foods such as:
x Peanut butter
x Whole nuts or nut bars
x Nutella
x Home-made baked goods containing nuts
For further information regarding tree nut and peanut products, please see the fliers at the conclusion of the newsletter.
