Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 2. We have had a jam packed first two weeks back with lots of exciting things happening both inside and outside the classroom.
Welcome Mrs Wheeler and Miss Flannery
This term we welcome Mrs Cathy Wheeler to our school. Mrs Wheeler will be teaching Year 5 one day per week while Mr Buchtmann has his Executive Release.
We also welcomed Miss Flannery to our school who will be working 2 days per week.
ANZAC Day
Our school marched proudly in the ANZAC Day march on the 25th of April. We also recognised ANZAC Day with a beautiful liturgy hosted by Year 2. We were very lucky to welcome Dr Tony Johnson and Mr Peter Forbes from the RSL who addressed us as well as ex-student Lucas Lyon and John Andrews who played the bagpipes.
Diocesan Cross Country
Thankyou to Mr Knoke who travelled with me and our school team to the Diocesan Cross Country last week. I was incredibly proud of our students display of sportsmanship during the day.
School Photo Day
Don’t forget that we have school photos this Wednesday, students are to wear full summer uniform.
Mother’s Day
Last Friday we celebrated all the special ladies in our lives. Year 1 hosted a beautiful liturgy and all students in the school drew a special portrait of their mum as a special gift. It was wonderful to be able to welcome you all into the school to join us for the liturgy and morning tea. Congratulations to our winners of the Mother's Day prizes - 1st - Alison Kesby, 2nd - Mikaylah Forbes and 3rd - Mary Doan.

Parent Engagement Meeting
On Wednesday the 18th of May we will have our first Parent Engagement Meeting of the year. The meeting will provide the opportunity for us to share our school focus areas for 2022 and to plan with you future meeting topics. There will be two meetings offered and we hope that you may be able to find the time to join one of these meetings. Please RSVP to the office by the 16th of May.
Aboriginal Education
Last week Aunty Kylie and I met with some of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents to discuss Aboriginal Education in our school. Our parents gave us some fantastic feedback on what they think we are doing well culturally in our school and shared some great ideas for what else we can do. We agreed to meet twice a term to continue to improve in our work in Aboriginal Education.
I pray that you and your families enjoyed a beautiful Mother’s Day and that you were able to spend a lovely day with each other.
God Bless
Making Jesus Real - Values of the Week
Week 3: I use safe hands and safe feet
Week 4: I Greet, Treat and Speak with Kindness (G.T.S)
Prime Minister Award
‘ Being a steward of creation’, ‘trying your best’, ‘speaking with kindness’ and ‘ being a responsible learner’ are some of the qualities that teachers consider when awarding ‘Prime Minister’ at our weekly assembly. It is an acknowledgement of the student’s efforts and they have the privilege of wearing the badge with honour, of suggesting a focus the school can work on, award Gotchas to other students at lunch time as well as earning Gotchas for themselves. Congratulations to Ben Linehan (Week 2) and Ella Housen-Helmer (Week 3).
MJR Awards
As part of our MJR system ,we acknowledge that the following students, Christian Borserio and Willow Eijkman have reached 100 Gotchas, Ashlea Linehan, Sienna Lapi-an, Caitlyn Lyon and Destiny Mastop have reached 200 Gotchas; Lara Prior has reached 300 Gotchas. Well Done!
Mary Mackillop Award
This award is presented to one student each term that consistently goes above and beyond to put the needs of others first. This award is founded on one of the most motivating and known sayings of Saint Mary MacKillop “never see a need without doing something about it” (1871). We present this award to someone who follows in Saint Mary’s footsteps by reaching out to the most needy and vulnerable in our school community. Congratulations goes to Sam Raison - Term 1.
Dio Cross Country
On Wednesday, 8 students travelled by bus to Maitaling for the Dio Cross Country Carnival. Competition in all age categories was extremely high and there was between 60-100 students in each race.
Our students competed well, were very well behaved and tried their best. The students learned a lot from the experience and can be proud of their efforts.
A big thank you to Mrs Hunt who escorted and supervised the students on the day.

Behaviour Management at St. Josephs – PBS and MJR Term 1 Recap
Joey’s Wingham is committed to creating a positive environment where all students are able to learn. We are using the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Making Jesus Real (MJR) systems because they involve a range of positive behaviour supports for all students within the school, implemented in both classroom and non-classroom settings.
Introducing, modelling and reinforcing positive social behaviour is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioural expectations, linking them to the real example that was Jesus and rewarding students for following them is both proactive and positive.
Over the course of each term student behaviour is monitored and problem behaviour (ranging from minor to major incidents) is referred to the Executive staff via a 'yellow form'. This data is recorded, analysed and shared with staff to determine focus areas for the following term.
Our Term 1 Data was extremely positive and shows 80% of students are always displaying positive behaviour. 91% of students had one minor incident or none at all.
We are very proud of our students and the way they work towards being safe, respectful learners at St. Joseph's!
