Dear Parents and Carers,
Student formation is one of our school improvement goals for 2024. Formation is an opportuntiy to continue to develop our relationship with God and others. It is also about a formative process within ourselves as we continue to develop in our sense of self and the world around us.
Last week Year 5 participated in their formation day which focused on Jesus and Leadership. This is a very important day for our Year 5 students as they prepare to step into their school leadership roles in Year 6.
During the day our students created a statement about what they think a leader of St Joseph’s is. Their statement certainly demonstrates they they will be wonderful leaders next year.
“A leader of St Joseph’s Wingham is someone who is supportive, considerate and is a compassionate and positive role model, by showing dignity and respect to everyone in our community.”
Thank you to Mr Buchtmann and Mrs Lapi-an who coordinated the day and to Father Kevin who was able to join the Year 5 students for a while.
Diocesan Public Speaking
Congratulations to Susannah and Miranda who recently travelled to Newcastle to compete in the Diocesan Public Speaking Finals. Both girls spoke incredibly well in a very tough competition. Tiana was also selected to attend the finals, but was unfortunately unable to attend.
Cooking with Mrs Hunt
Congratulations to Aurora who selected cooking with Mrs Hunt for her PBS award. Aurora made banana milkshakes for her class, which were a great treat on a hot day.
Welcome Ayaan
Year 3 welcomed Ayaan to their class recently. Ayaan and his family have moved from the central coast. It is wonderful to see our students making Ayaan feel so welcome at our school.
Despite governments globally moving towards raising the minimum age for social media access due to mounting concerns about the negative effects on youth mental health and wellbeing, there's now an even newer challenge on the horizon - the rise of romantic and companion AI bots. These virtual companions are becoming increasingly popular with young people, raising serious questions about privacy, ethics, and the future of relationships in the digital age.
The rise of AI-powered relationships is offering a new frontier in human interaction. Initially emerging in the gaming world, AI companionship has evolved into mainstream culture, with apps providing personalised experiences that range from platonic friendships to romantic encounters. These interactions can blur the boundaries between real and virtual relationships, creating confusion and potential psychological harm.
Criminologists warn that children as young as 12 are accessing dating apps, often bypassing age restrictions, exposing them to sexual content and predatory behaviour. Researchers have also found that many adolescents are turning to virtual partners for validation, risking unhealthy emotional attachments that can affect real-life relationships.
As AI reshapes social dynamics, it's crucial to stay informed and engaged. While AI can enhance education and creativity, it also presents challenges around privacy, mental health, and misinformation. This Special Report will help you foster an open dialogue and balanced approach to help young people navigate this evolving digital landscape.
Last week as a Catholic School we recognised All Souls Day and All Saints Day. Please join me in a prayer to remember those who have gone before us.
Thank you, God, for the sacrifices and contributions made by those who have gone before us. Bless the memories of your saints and our loved ones. May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love and may we continue to hold their memories close.
Amen
God Bless

‘Being a steward of creation’, ‘Trying your best’, ‘Speaking with kindness’ and ‘Being a responsible learner’ are some of the qualities that teachers consider when awarding ‘Prime Minister’ at our weekly assembly. It is an acknowledgement of the student’s efforts and they have the privilege of wearing the badge with honour, of suggesting a focus the school can work on, award Gotchas to other students at lunch time as well as earning Gotchas for themselves.
