Principals Report

Welcome back to school! I hope you had a fabulous and restful break with your families and are ready for another big year at St Joseph's Wingham.

I would like to welcome our new students and their families to Joey's: Bailey Wilmen (Yr 4), Arthur Lee (Yr 3), Destiny Mastop (Yr 2) & Taleigha Crowe (2), as well as all of our new Kinders, 19 in total. Last Friday was the first day for our Kinders and it went pretty smoothly as their buddies welcomed and supported them throughout the day. Over the holidays we had a few staffing changes resulting in Mrs Fraser being appointed on Year 3 for the year and Mrs Downie being appointed to the job share in Kinder with Mrs Long. Both teachers are long standing at our school and know our routines and students well, which will assist in a smooth transition.

This year, our focus will continue to be improving upon Literacy and Numeracy outcomes for students through the continuation of our Flexible Learning Groups in Maths - teachers collaboratively working together in our Professional Learning Community; teachers upskilling in Writing through the '7 steps for writing resource' and then implementing into the classroom; teachers upskilling in spelling with Dr Tessa Daffern (University of Canberra) and then implementing into the classroom; continuation of Gifted Education days and working towards identification of students; continuation of STEM focus through weekly Makerspace with Miss Schmitzer; and beginning our journey in 'Making Jesus Real'. So please continue to stay updated through our newsletters as we aim to continually inform and update you in all of these areas throughout the year.

Last week involved our Year 2-6 school swimming carnival with amazingly spirited participation and team support. Our red team Paterson were the overall winners on the day with a close runner up in Lawson. A big thank to our parent helpers and staff for a smooth carnival. We have 25 successful swimmers attending our Regional carnival next week in Gloucester. We also celebrated and acknowledged our Year 6 leaders at our Beginning school mass with the Parish. We have 20 leaders this year whose role it is to model exceptional behaviour, support others in their leadership and to promote our school in the community as an outstanding educational and spiritual facility. Each student received their leader badge and Year 6 shirt and stated a pledge to be the best that they can be.

This year the Parish will be running the Sacramental Program for children 8 years and above. If you are interested please attend the Parent Information Session on Thursday 15th February @7pm at the Taree Resource Centre (next to the Church). Our P&F AGM/meeting is on Monday 12 February @5.30pm and if you are able to attend and be a part of this committee you are most welcome. The P&F play a vital role within our school community as they continue to support Joey's in growing and improving. So come along and let your voice be heard!

I look forward to a wonderful year in 2018 and can't wait to see what adventures we all go on together!

Have a wonderful week ahead and God Bless!

Emma Timmins

Opening School Mass

Recently we commissioned our School Leaders during our Opening School Mass. Remaining true to their leadership role, Year 6 even sat with their Kinder buddies during the mass whilst participating in the readings and offertory procession, before their badges were blessed and presented by Father George. Our leaders have many responsibilities around the school, from Health Hustle to running our Weekly Assembly and setting up the lunch seats daily. These things ensure the smooth running of our school and we are most grateful to have such a capable and responsible cohort of young people in this role!

Congratulations Drew Cini on your tremendous efforts representing Australia at the Australasian Futsal Cup in Hawaii last year. The team came 3rd out of 10 and are now off to Malaysia in November this year. Well done!!

Last year Jackson Barry was one of 7 students from the Maitland Diocese to successfully make it to the next level for cricket. On Friday he will travel to Newcastle to find out if he has made it on the team. Good luck Jackson!

Swimming Carnival

On Monday 5th February students from Years 2 – 6 took part in our St Joseph’s 2018 swimming carnival at Wingham Pool. Students walked down to the pool from school in the morning and took part in many competitive and not so competitive events. As you can see from the pictures everyone was in great spirits on the day, cheering on one another and their house teams. From the competitive races, Paterson was our winning house for 2018 and the following students were awarded Age Champions for 2018:

Junior Boys – Riley Hill
Junior Girls – Gabriela Swierczynski
11 years Boys – Charlie Pereira
11 years Girls – Claire Downie
Senior Boys – Joshua Wicks
Senior Girls – Lara Bryant and Isabelle Abbott

From this carnival, 26 students have been selected to represent our school at the Manning Region Swimming Carnival taking place at Gloucester Olympic Pool on Tuesday 13th February.

A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped out on the day and to all of those parents who took the time to come down and cheer on our students.

New Kinders

The Kinders have had a great week settling into school life. We were greeted by our Yr 6 buddies on the first day who made us feel very welcome. They have been great at helping us get comfortable in our classroom and on the playground. It’s been a busy week for us, learning school rules and routines and beginning all our learning with our teachers. We look forward to an action packed year of fun and learning!
