Principal’s Report

Welcome Back Everyone!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year. Starting school is an exciting time and, for thirteen brave little souls, last Friday was the first step on that educational journey. A special welcome to new parents and families as well.

Even as parents we share in the optimism of a new school year and the hope that comes from our kids learning and growing. The research is clear: when parents are positive about their child’s education and supportive of their school’s efforts to create a positive learning environment then students begin to see themselves as capable learners. When this happens students will eventually forget the voice of failure and embrace the “have a go” and “I can figure that out” mentality. It also creates excitement about learning. We look forward to working with you all this year for the benefit of your children.

A special welcome to all our new students and their families who have joined our school in other classes too including:

Year 2 - Jaxon Osgood

Year 3 – Sam Raison

I would like to add a special ‘thank you’ to parents and families for making me feel so welcome at St Josephs. It is great to be here – even if only for the term.

Yours sincerely,

Justin Hutchens
Principal Term 1

From this carnival, 27 students have been selected to represent our school at the Manning Region Swimming Carnival taking place at Gloucester Olympic Pool on Wednesday 13th February.

A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped out on the day and to all of those parents who took the time to come down and cheer on our students.

Plenary Council 2020

Next year will see the first plenary Council for the Catholic Church in Australia for 80 years. The purpose of the Plenary Council is to address the question of how the church might better advance the faith in Australia. As we are the church we are responsible for its renewal too. We are invited to have our say about where and why we consider change is necessary. We cordially invite parents to join with staff next Wednesday for a Plenary session here at St Josephs, facilitated by Mark Spencer (Catholic Schools Office). We will work as a group or individuals to submit our suggestions to this national conversation.

Venue: School Hall Time: 3:10pm – 4:40pm

Principal Appointment Process - Consultation

Many thanks to those parents who were able to make to our consultation this week. As you are aware, the Catholic Schools Office will soon advertise the position of principal for St Joseph’s Primary School, Wingham. Your input will form the basis of the desirable criteria attached to the position statement.

Parent Information Night

Our school’s Parent Information Evening will be held next Wednesday 13 February. These sessions will provide parents with important information about their child’s scholastic year as well as being an opportunity for teachers and parents to meet and get to know one another—some for the first time.

Teachers will present information on school routines, class expectations and overview the term’s learning program — as well as any additional information that will assist your child in the smooth transition to their new class. All meetings will be held in your child’s classroom.

Meetings have been organised in 15-minute intervals so that parents can attend more than one meeting if they need to. Kinder parents will have a longer session given this is their first year of school.

Please note - Teachers are not available for individual interviews with parents on this evening. Parents are welcome to make an appointment at the school office for another mutually convenient time should they wish to meet personally with their child’s class teacher.

Library News

This year we have decided to have students borrow their library books during their library lesson. Mrs Yerbury and myself (Ms Monkley) will be there to assist students with borrowing and book selection. Over the past week we have been discussing 'good fit books'; so just like a choosing a the right pair of shoes for the right activity, we need to pick books that are a 'good fit'.

Our 2019 borrowing schedule:

Monday: Year 6,5,2,1
Tuesday: Year 4,3,K

Students in K-4 are requested to have a library bag to ensure our books remain in good condition for everyone to enjoy. We also offer students the opportunity to come to the library during lunchtimes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and return and re-borrow books if they wish.

Happy Reading
Kate Monkley

School Policy – General Consent

A Parent Authority Form will come home with your child today. This General Consent form covers an authority to walk to and from Wingham Central Park for activities related to classroom learning and sport. It also has information to discuss with your child re: internet and email usage that all students in the system must sign. As mentioned, we also seek your consent to take photo/video images of your child for use in the learning program or to publish. Please read, sign and return to the school office as soon as possible.

Taking photos at school – what you need to know

Schools are guided by the Privacy Act which is the reason we seek consent from parents to use/publish images as part of the learning program and cultural life of the school. This consent is not always given and often for valid family reasons.

Therefore, taking photographs and images of children at schools is not so much the issue as is the unauthorised use of images.

Parents need to be mindful of the privacy of others when photographing your child at school events. While it is not always possible (or easy) to just photograph your own child in some settings, care should be taken not to upload images of school events to your social media website, especially if other students are visible.

While some schools have banned the use of cameras at school events altogether we don’t want to deprive parents of the chance to capture that special moment. We just need to balance this with other’s right to privacy. If in doubt, the school staff will invite parents to take photos when appropriate to do so.

We are still looking for Canteen for volunteers for 2019!!

The school canteen is a voluntary organisation. Money raised by the canteen is spent on the children at the school. The canteen cannot operate without the generous donation of time by our dedicated volunteers.

At this stage the canteen will operate 1 x day per week each Friday, commencing this Friday 8th February. Depending on the number of volunteers, this may increase to 2 days per week in the future.

Volunteers are needed once a month for just 3 hours from 9.30am-12.30pm.

Everyone is most welcome to join including dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. NB: Any volunteer in the school must obtain a Working With Children Check Number.

Happy Birthday Wishes!
