Principal’s Report

Dear Parents,

It has been a lovely start to Term 2 and the community at St Joseph’s have certainly made me feel very welcome. This week I have enjoyed spending time in all classes getting to know the children and hearing about what they are learning in class. I have also spent time with all of the teachers and heard some wonderful things about what is happening in classrooms.

On Tuesday I was able to be a part of our School’s Commemorative ANZAC Day Service, it was such a beautiful and respectful event and I felt very proud of Year 3 who ran the service, thank you Mr Knoke and Year 3. It was also lovely to see so many parents come and share in this liturgy. A stand out moment for me was being able to witness the pride of Tony Ryan from the Wingham RSL Sub Branch who was one of our dignitaries for the day, he had his daughter, grand-daughter and great grand-daughter Matilda who is in Kinder all there on the day, what a special memory for him.

I would like to wish good luck to all of those students who will be representing our school at the Diocesan Cross Country tomorrow. I am sure they are excited and looking forward to representing our school.

Last Wednesday night I spoke at Little Beginnings along with a number of other schools in regards to school readiness. If you know anyone that is interested or thinking about sending their child to Kinder next year please encourage them to contact the office, I would love to have a chat to them about what makes St Joseph’s such a great place to send their children.

I am looking forward to meeting you all soon and will do my best to remember your names, but it may take me a little while to get there. Hopefully I will meet some of you next Friday for morning tea after the Mother’s Day Liturgy. Otherwise if you see me in the playground please say hello and introduce yourselves.

I am so pleased and blessed to have become the Principal of St Joseph’s Wingham and I am looking forward to working with you in your child’s learning journey.

God Bless

Mel Hunt

Anzac Day March

Thank you to the families who were able to attend the Anzac March. We very much appreciate your representation on behalf of our school. We are proud of our student’s ongoing commitment to the March and appreciate the effort of parents to make this happen.

School News

We welcome new student, Shainne Xuereb (Year 1) and her family to our school community.

Prime Minister Award

‘Being a steward of creation’, ‘trying your best’, ‘speaking with kindness’ and ‘ being a responsible learner’ are some of the qualities that teachers consider when awarding ‘Prime Minister’ at our weekly assembly. It is an acknowledgement of the student’s efforts and they have the privilege of wearing the badge with honour, of suggesting a focus the school can work on, award gotchas to other students at lunch time as well as earning gotchas for themselves. Congratulations to Dillon McGreal.

MJR Awards

As part of our MJR system ,we acknowledge that the following student, Kai Linton has reached 100 Gotchas! Well Done.

Mary Mackillop Award

We congratulate Lisa Fresen who received the Mary Mackillop Award in Term 1. Staff nominate a student each term who, in their everyday actions follow the example of Mary Mackillop – “never seeing a need without doing something about it”. Congratulations Lisa!

Year 5 Happenings

Last term we were hands on and participated in a range of educational activities. This included propagating succulents which we got to decorate, nurture and watch grow. We worked together to construct a cubic metre (harder than you think!) which we tried to fit as many students as we could inside, art lessons, worm talks, liturgies and a range of physical activities from school sports to the School Colour Run!

Here are some of Year 5’s favourite moments from the term:

  • Colour run
  • Monster art in class
  • Gymnastics
  • Reading in class
  • Propagating our succulents
  • St. Clare’s Art Day (Katelyn, Emma)
  • Library
  • Making a cubic metre

Parents & Friends Association

A big “THANK YOU” to everyone who raised funds in the Colour Fun Run, towards our goal of purchasing a Defibrillator for the school. We have raised $3361.00 so far. The final date for all monies to be returned to school is Wednesday 8th May and prizes will be available approx 3 weeks from this date.

The kids and families of St Joseph’s Wingham have put together a beautiful cookbook and we would love to share this book with the community at a cost of $20.00 per book – perfect for Mother’s Day. If you wish to order one, please see Mary in the office.

Don’t forget, we will be holding our annual Mother’s Day Stall on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th May. There will be gifts ranging from $1-$5.

Parents & Friends Association:
Our next meeting is on Monday 20 May 2019 at 5:00pm.
