Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been lovely to see some rain this week. As I write this I can’t believe that this will be the last newsletter for this term. I would like to thank all of the staff, students and parents who have made me feel so welcome and I am looking forward to continuing to meet you as the year progresses.

Year 5 are currently organising a winter appeal for St Vincent de Paul. Thank you to everyone who has helped by donating a tin of soup. We will be delivering the soup next Wednesday, so if you would still like to help out that would be wonderful.

On Friday Semester 1 school reports will become live on Compass. If you haven’t activated your log in for Compass or need assistance with this please contact the school office.

I am pleased to announce that Mrs Shae Lapi-An will be returning from maternity leave next term. Mrs Lapi-An will be teaching Year 5 from Wednesday to Friday and Mrs Whitlam will continue to teach the class on Monday and Tuesday. Mrs Carolyn Long will be reducing her hours for the remainder of the year and Mrs Whitlam will be providing Executive Release for Mrs Lapi-An in her Assistant Principal role and Mr Adam Buchtmann who will be undertaking an Assistant Principal and Religious Education Coordinator role. I would like to thank Mr Michael Wickham who has been acting REC while Mr Buchtmann has been Acting Assistant Principal during Mrs Lapi-An’s leave.

Next Thursday and Friday we will hold our Pupil Free Days. During these two days the staff will be on retreat and reviewing our school Vision and Mission statements. Thank you to all parents who have completed the parent survey. We will be using your feedback to assist us in our work. The survey is open until Monday and you can access it via the following link.

God Bless

Prime Minister Award

‘ Being a steward of creation’, ‘trying your best’, ‘speaking with kindness’ and ‘ being a responsible learner’ are some of the qualities that teachers consider when awarding ‘Prime Minister’ at our weekly assembly. It is an acknowledgement of the student’s efforts and they have the privilege of wearing the badge with honour, of suggesting a focus the school can work on, award gotchas to other students at lunch time as well as earning gotchas for themselves. Congratulations to Evie O’Neill (Week 9) and Emma Letheren (Week 10)

MJR Awards

As part of our MJR system ,we acknowledge that the following student, Ella Bos has reached 200 Gotchas! Well Done.

Mary Mackillop Award

We congratulate Harry Macmillan who has received the Mary Mackillop Award in Term 2. Staff nominate a student each term who, in their everyday actions follow the example of Mary Mackillop – “never seeing a need without doing something about it”. Congratulations Lisa!

Learning Support

Our wonderful Learning Support Assistants do a fantastic job to support the teachers and students in our school. It is always a pleasure to see their smiling faces in the classrooms and around the playground. Thank you for all you do Carol, Jane, Roz, Tom, Janet, Natasha and Jo.

ART CLASSES

Students participating in After-School Art Classes in Term 2 have been busy putting the finishing touches on their art works.

Years 1-3 have been experimenting with colour mixing in painting classes. They created abstract paintings on canvas, using warm and cool colours.

Students in Years 4-6 have been learning observational skills and drawing techniques that utilise the right hemisphere of the brain. They demonstrated their skills creating portraits.

Artworks will be on display later this year at our first student art exhibition as part of Joey's Annual Festival of the Arts at the Manning Entertainment Centre.

After-School Art Classes will be back in Term 3 and St Joseph's students in Years 1-6 are invited to sign up for sculpture lessons.
Our Monday afternoon group for Years 1-3 will be learning about proportions of the face while creating a soft sculpture from textiles including felt.
On Thursdays, Year 4-6 students will be working together to build large-scale lanterns from wire and papier-mache in the lead up to our big night out at JAFA.
Join us for what promises to be a lot of hands-on fun for our group of budding artists. Enrolment forms need to be returned together with deposit before the end of term to the school office, so don't delay!
