Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Over the past two weeks I have taken the last of our Year 5 and 6 students to Wingham District Pre-school and Cuddlepie for their shared reading and craft activities. Our Year 5 and 6 students have done a wonderful job representing our school in the community and have made me very proud in the way that they have conducted themselves and prepared some excellent activities for their little pre-school friends.

Our JAFA rehearsals are in full swing with classes almost ready for our big night next week. The work that goes on behind the scenes has been amazing from costumes and props to scripts and in between acts, our students are certainly in for a fantastic evening. I would like to thank all of our teachers, staff and students for the hard work they put in to create such a wonderful event.

This week we welcomed Reuby and Scarlett Sheather back to Year 2. It is lovely to have the girls back at St Joseph’s.

This week, notes came home calling for volunteers for our school fete. The fete is a major fundraiser for the school which is organised by our P&F and all of the money raised goes towards a number of projects at the school including computers, playground improvements and programs that are run in the school. It would be wonderful if you could spare an hour on the day to assist in manning a stall, or helping in some other way.

Have a wonderful break over the holidays and enjoy this special time with your children. Don’t forget to buy your tickets for JAFA, it is going to be a great night.

God Bless

Cricket Gala Day

Our Primary Students had a great time at the Wingham Cricket Gala Day last Thursday, hosted by Cricket NSW and Wingham Cricket Club. Special thanks to Mr Knoke for coordinating our school teams and to the parents who were able to assist on the day. Our students had a fun time, they participated in the day with great sportsmanship and their behaviour was excellent.

Rural Fire Brigade Visit

On Monday, Years 3 and 4 attended a fire safety presentation with Rural Fire Service Officer Robyn King. Students were highly engaged in a fun and interactive learning experience that involved learning about all facets of a fire emergency.

Here are some of Yr 3 student responses -

Emilia Wallace - I learnt that if I want to prevent a fire at my house to move all the logs, leaves, sticks and to find a safe place.
Jet Saunders - I learnt that if I am on fire to stop, drop and roll over.
Sam Raison - I learnt to always ring 000 in an emergency and to make sure I know my address and phone number.

The fire visit is extremely relevant at the moment with large amounts of the State suffering bushfires and drought. We are thankful for recent rain relief, however, please pray for more to come!

What’s been happening in Year 5

Year 5 have been busy with JAFA preparations this term. We are all looking forward to our big night next week, and all students have demonstrated growth in Creative Arts.In Geography, students have been researching the devestating effects of deforestation through our Term 3 unit investigating "Factors that Shape Places". In Religion, Year 5 have developed their knoweledge and understadning about different types of prayer. Students have enjoyed learning about adaptations in Science with Ms Wilson. They nave been learning about safe behaviours and making positive health choices through their PD/H/PE unit. All students were able to present a prepared and impromptu speech to the class and have consolidated their knowledge of the literary concept 'Argument'. Throughout the term all students have continued to participate in Maths FLGs with enthusiasm, and have developed their understanding of class based content including length, statistics and probability and time.

Head Lice

We wish to advise we have had a recent report of nits/lead lice in classrooms.

To assist us in the prevention of head lice spreading please ensure you check your child/ren’s hair. If head lice or nits are found please treat immediately. They generally cause itching behind the ears and above the neck. Spread is by direct contact with the hair of someone who is infested, or by contact with personal items such as combs or hats. Incubation period for the eggs (nits) is usually 7 days. Once hatched the lice are capable of laying eggs after 10 days.

NB: Students who become infested with lice should be excluded from school and may return the day after treatment has commenced.

No Parking Notice

Can you please make sure that you are not parking against the building of the Wingham Museum up to the container. This is allocated parking for the Museum and they have been finding it hard to park as people are taking up their parking spaces. Thanks for your support.
