Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks and it is hard to believe that we only have 8 school days left! Time flies when you are having fun.

Our End of Year Mass in the Church was such a beautiful celebration of our 2019 year. We also celebrated with our Year 6 Graduation Mass and Dinner which was such a wonderful evening. Our Year 6 students have been outstanding leaders in our school this year and I wish them all the best for their journey into high school. Thank you to all of the staff and parents who contributed to making these events a success.

The Treasure Trove was a huge hit with many busy little shoppers spending up big on Wednesday. Thank you to all of the families that donated to this wonderful event. Our school was able to raise almost $500 which will be added to the Year 6 gift to the school.

This week our staff have been busy cooking up a storm to help feed dinner to the volunteers of Blaze aid who are based at Wingham Showground. The charism of our Josephite tradition of helping others in need is truly alive at St Joseph’s.

Next Thursday Night we will be having a stall at the Wingham Christmas Carnival. Our stall will run from 5.30pm – 8.30pm and we will be selling glow sticks and lucky dips as well as face painting. Many of our teachers are coming along to help, but if you have some spare time and would like to help us promote our school at this community event, please contact Mary with the time you are able to help.

The Carnival is going to have some wonderful things this year. At 6pm there will be a foot parade of our volunteers and firies, so come along and show your support of these wonderful members of our community. There will also be a Stack Hat exchange with the RMS so if you have an old stack hat you can bring it along and exchange it for a new one.

‘ Being a steward of creation’, ‘trying your best’, ‘speaking with kindness’ and ‘ being a responsible learner’ are some of the qualities that teachers consider when awarding ‘Prime Minister’ at our weekly assembly. It is an acknowledgement of the student’s efforts and they have the privilege of wearing the badge with honour, of suggesting a focus the school can work on, award gotchas to other students at lunch time as well as earning gotchas for themselves. Congratulations to Bailey Wilmen (Week 8) and Amara Hilton (Week 9)

Library News

Sphero in the Library – Week 1

In the library this week it was all about Sphero. You may have heard the exciting news that St Joseph’s Wingham were successful in gaining a class set of Sphero robots on loan for the remainder of the term. This was made possible through the University of Adelaide – School of Computer Science Education Research group.

Students have had the opportunity to use devices to explore the functions of Sphero. They love to try new things that they don’t normally have access to. Over the next two weeks we will be using the Sphero’s and the Sphero EDU app to code and complete challenges. St Joseph’s will be taking part in the international Hour of Code during the Computer Science week.

A big thank you to all the students for being respectful, sensible and for following the rules around the Bring Your Own Device initiative.

New Fete Date – Saturday 28th March

Dear Families

We would like to let you know that, as planned, the Fete Raffle will be drawn at the school fete which, due to the recent bushfires, has been postponed until 28 March 2020. As such, the raffle will lose its Christmas touch and take on an Easter flavour.

All ticket books that were issued to families need to be returned to the school office, together with cash.from ticket sales. We would appreciate these being sent in at your earliest convenience. The raffle has some really fabulous prizes and is a big part of our major fundraising event, It is a great opportunity for the wider community to support our school. We wish you luck with your ticket sales and offer many thanks from the P&F.

Kindest regards, Ann McDermott
