Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back. I would like to welcome all of our new staff, Mrs Kristy Bonser is working in Year 4 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with Mrs Lapi-An. We welcome back Mrs Grace Fraser who will be working two days a week with our Aboriginal students. We also welcome Aunty Kylie who will be our Aboriginal Education Worker and will be responsible for cultural education in our school. I would also like to extend a big warm welcome to our new families and students in Kinder as well as Jayden in Year 2, Bryson in Year 3, Nicole in Year 5 and Leyna in Year 6.

This year we are changing the format of our Parent Information Evenings. Kindergarten will have their Parent Information Night on 24th February at 5.45pm. This will be a great opportunity for our Kinder parents to find out about the workings of the classroom. All students have received a class information note with the information for their class. During Week 6 we will be having Parent Teacher meetings, where parents will have the opportunity to touch base with teachers to set some goals for the year.

How do I know what is going on?

We do our best to keep you informed of what is happening in the school. Information is sent out via different means depending on what it is.

Paper notes – Sometimes we need to send a paper note home, so keep an eye out in your child’s bag.

Compass- This is our main form of communication. Please make sure you have signed up and have a log in. If you can’t remember your log in or need a log in, please contact Mary in the office. School Reports are available on Compass, so this is important.

Facebook – We will often share photos, videos and reminders on Facebook, like and follow our page; St Joseph’s Primary School, Wingham.

Email - Our newsletters are emailed and these come out every second week on a Friday. School Fee Statements are also emailed each Term.

Chairs for Sale

Last year we were lucky enough to receive a large amount of school furniture from another Catholic School. This enabled us to update some furniture in classrooms. We have been left with a number of child sized chairs which we no longer need. If you would like to buy one of these chairs for home they are $5 each. Please contact Mary in the office if you are interested.

This year we are hoping to run canteen every Monday as well as some Fridays which will be Meal Deal Days. If you are able to volunteer for any of these days we would love your help. Without volunteers we can’t open, so any help is much appreciated.

Our next P&F Meeting will be Monday the 10th of Febraury from 5.15pm – 6.15pm. This meeting will be the first of the year and our main agenda item will be preparation and planning for the upcoming School Fete. If you are interested in coming along to see what happens in this group, or you would like to help with the fete you are more than welcome to come along.

I hope you are enjoying the rain. It is so lovely to have some green grass back in the playground. Have a wonderful fortnight.

God Bless

What is PBS?

St. Joseph’s Wingham is committed to creating a positive environment where all students are able to learn. We are using the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) system because it involves a range of positive behaviour supports for all students within the school, implemented in both classroom and non-classroom settings.

Introducing, modelling and reinforcing positive social behaviour is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioural expectations and rewarding students for following them is both proactive and positive.

Each week, as part of the program, the classroom teachers will teach students expected behaviours. The same behaviours are taught across the school to help maintain uniformity and to ensure that all behaviours are taught throughout the year.

Our school has 3 core behavioural expectations that reflect our community’s values. We call them “The 3 Wise I’s”

I am Safe

I am Respectful

I am a Learner

As we are a Catholic school we also have the value of I am a Steward of Creation.

Gotchas: As part of the PBS Program, “Gotchas” are given to students for positive social behaviours in the classroom, playground and for individual acts of great respect. These behaviours relate to our school-wide expectations of being safe, respectful learners. Each Gotcha, which students collect, equals a point. These points are collated each week in the classroom and students can redeem these points for rewards. These rewards can be redeemed each Thursday on Reward Day.

Referral Forms:

In the instance of a student failing to meet the set expectations of being safe, respectful learners, the incident is recorded on a “Yellow Form”. This is an in-school referral system that assists us with tracking and monitorning student behaviour. We also use this data to inform our future focus areas at the beginning of each term.

If a student has three incidents referred via “Yellow Forms” in the space of a term, or is involved in a moderate or major incident, parents will be notified via a blue parent form. This process allows for opportunities to discuss behaviour expectations with the student, and to reinforce positive behaviour, whilst monitoring and recording any problem behaviour.
